You see, flying has never been something I actually enjoy doing.
I still hate it but back in the day, I would get regular panic attacks at airports. Like a 4-year old. Panic attacks really are the worst. And this plane was super tiny. During the flight, the door to the cockpit was open most of the time as the stewardess was talking to the captains.
It seemed absolutely insane! I did calm down after a while and with dried up tears actually managed to have a look out the window - which, I mean, jackpot! Nothing beats seeing kilometre of kilometre of gigantic icebergs and glaciers from above.
In the end, this flight totally changed my view of flying. It was super smooth - so smooth in fact that I now prefer smaller planes over big ones, even though smaller ones usually shake a lot more in turbulence, I guess.
Anyway, the flight took approximately 3 hours. Just 24 hours earlier, I had to adjust to the Icelandic timezone and now the Greenlandic one throws yet another one at me. The official flight time, according to Air Iceland, however, is 3 hours and 20 minutes. Again though, it depends on the weather and wind, so anything between 3 and 4 hours seems to be normal. I personally visited Nuuk at the height of summer in July where I encountered everything from sunshine and what felt like 20 degrees Celsius to thick mist and temperatures around 0 degrees within the space of only a few days.
At summer equinox in June, Nuuk gets 21 hours of daylight. The Northern Lights can be seen in and around Nuuk if the weather allows for it and the lights are strong enough! It was cheaper than renting a hotel room for an entire week, though it did come with the disadvantage of being situated a minute walk from the city centre needless to say I quickly got used to the local bus systemЕ.
Then again, those views from that apartment and the flat itself were just hard to beat. It was an incredible place to live in, if only for a short week! When talking to the Greenlandic locals, I was, however, also made aware of the fact that many people struggle to find a place to live in Nuuk as the housing situation there is just incredibly difficult.
While the former is a little more on the pricy side, it does come with the advantage of being situated right in the heart of the city centre. First of all, you should come to Greenland for the scenery - not for the abundance of things to see and do. My favourite thing to do in Nuuk was the fjord safari during which I saw a humpback whale for the very first time, closely followed by the day I climbed a mountain a small one, though all on my own for the first time. To this day, I regret not having spent the money on a trip to see actual icebergs up close!
Ilulissat is situated north of Nuuk, meaning that the town experiences polar night no sunlight at all, just a few hours of twilight all throughout December and the first half of January. Keep in mind that this is really just an average, though. Winter temperatures in Greenland can drop to degrees Celsius or lower - or can feel like it due to the wind chill factor!

Southern Greenland also probably feels most like Iceland as there are hot springs where you can take a dip. The region also has plenty of Viking history to offer, as well as glaciers and even sheep herding.
As Narsarsuaq is a lot smaller than Nuuk and Ilulissat, I suggest sticking to visiting during the main tourist season in the summer months when also plenty of cruise ships visit the region and your choice of tours and activities is a lot bigger.
None of them are exactly luxurious this is rural Greenland after all and you should book your room in advance for the best deals.
